Stephen: Thanks for the memories, Anthony

CFL.ca

Like everyone associated with the CFL, I have many memories of Anthony Calvillo.

Here are a couple that stand out:

Following the now infamous 2009 Grey Cup, Calvillo was walking around the field almost in utter disbelief about winning.  He had a huge smile stapled to his face as he walked around, taking in the scene at McMahon Stadium.

Not only was the game the most improbable Grey Cup win ever, it also ended a string of Grey Cup futility for the Als.  It was easy to see the relief he felt.

Another memory came this past year.

Calvillo had always been pleasant and accommodating in his dealings with the media and this day at McMahon Stadium was no exception.

Several of us crowded around Calvillo for some comments on the upcoming game and I walked away from the scrum as a couple of other reporters finished up their line of questioning.

I was standing across the room as the scrum broke up.

Calvillo was leaving the room, when he turned and walked over to me.  He asked me how I was and if everything was going alright.

I told him all was fine and I was looking forward to the next day’s game.  He said he was also looking forward to the game but to a different outcome.

Innocent stuff, but interesting that Calvillo would make a point of talking to me.  I have talked to Calvillo on numerous occasions, but, deep in the back of his mind, I wonder if he realized this might be his final trip to Calgary.

This incident, by the way, took place pre-concussion.  Interesting. Very interesting.
