Irving: Calvillo always managed to find a way

CFL.ca

There were so many games throughout his illustrious career that saw Anthony Calvillo light up the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for 3, 4 or even 500 yards passing, that selecting one that stands out would be just about as difficult as picking your favorite Beatles song.

How do you choose?

I will settle on the 2013 CFL season opener when Calvillo, under new coach Dan Hawkins, led the Als into Winnipeg’s Investors Group Field.

It was clear from the game’s outset that Calvillo was not comfortable with what was going on with the Als’ newly devised offence.

He repeatedly left the field shaking his head. His body language consistently revealed a frustration bordering on anger.

And yet, as all the great ones do, Calvillo found a way.

A late game Calvillo hail-mary touchdown pass to SJ Green allowed the Alouettes to eventually pull off a 38-33 victory.  The following week Calvillo, could not muster a similar performance as the Bombers won the rematch.

But that season-opening win in Winnipeg typified what Calvillo was all about.

In addition to the incredible stats he amassed in his spectacular career, Calvillo’s Alouettes found themselves in the “win” column far more often than the “loss”.

And that is the true testament to his greatness.
