Pre-Game Breakdown: Tiger-Cats vs. Alouettes

Ticats.ca Staff

The Tiger-Cats will look to bounce back from a tough loss in Montreal last week and clinch a home playoff date when they return to Guelph this weekend to host their final regular season game at Alumni Stadium against the Alouettes at 1 p.m.

Now one game above the Als in the standings, the Ticats will look to once again get above .500 with a win, which would give them the season series win the Alouettes and solidify the second spot in the East Division. The ‘Cats are 6–2 against divisional opponents in 2013, a record they’ll be looking to improve in the final two games of the season.

Few players on the Tiger-Cats defence have had as much of an impact in 2013 as Brandon Boudreaux.

Building off an impressive rookie season that saw him record 30 tackles and five sacks, Boudreaux has picked up right where he left off this season and is out to post new career bests in all categories.

His seven sacks so far in 2013 lead all Ticats defensive players, and he’s been on fire lately, posting three sacks and 12 tackles in the past three games.

Boudreaux will look to keep his three-game sack streak alive this weekend against Troy Smith and the Alouettes.

Last week, the Montreal Alouettes started their fourth different quarterback this year, former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.

In his debut last Sunday, Smith completed 17-of-35 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns while rushing three times for 16 yards.

This week Smith will look to repeat his performance from his debut, albeit against a Hamilton team who now has a week’s worth of film study to prepare. In addition to the implications for this this year’s CFL playoffs, a repeat performance by Smith on Saturday could go a long way to establishing him the heir-apparent to Calvillo in Montreal.

Let’s take a look at two of the top pass-catchers in Saturday’s matchup…

PLAYERS TO WATCH

OL Joel Figueroa
Figueroa has been a force as the starting right tackle for the Tiger-Cats this season. Figueroa hasn’t suited up in the Black and Gold since September 12th, but after practicing fully this week for the first time since his injury, he’s ready to make his return to the field.

QB Dan LeFevour
Second-year quarterback Dan LeFevour has had an interesting role in the Tiger-Cats offence this season. Offensive coordinator Tommy Condell has used the versatile quarterback as a typical passer, a running quarterback and who can forget the one time he played receiver. LeFevour who has seen a bulk of action as a change-of-pace pivot, has accounted for eight of the Ticats touchdowns this season. He needs one more touchdown to tie former quarterback Quinton Porter (9) for the club’s single-season touchdown record by a quarterback.

WR Bakari Grant
Bakari Grant currently leads the Ticats and ranks second in the East division among pass catchers with 68 receptions for 930 yards and two touchdowns. Grant, a third-year Tiger-Cat, needs just 70 yards over the next two weeks to amass 1,000 yards receiving for the first time in his career. This season Grant has registered 5+ catches and 60+ yards in seven different games.

  • Burris has accumulated 4,992 rushing yards over his 15-year career. Burris needs a total of eight yards on Sunday to hit the 5,000-yard mark.  He would become the 39th player and 6th QB in CFL history to hit 5,000.
