Stephen: Getzlaf, Dressler the focus for Calgary’s ‘D’

When the Canadian Football League released the 2013 schedule, one had a feeling this late season matchup might have huge implications on the final standings.

That is exactly what has transpired.

A Calgary win clinches home field and a bye straight to the Western Final.  A Saskatchewan win ensures the first place battles continues into the final weekend of the season, but also ensures Saskatchewan holds the tie breaker in the season series.

There is plenty of excitement for this game in both markets.  Calgary is pushing a sellout of over 35,000 for the game and the build up has been considerable.

Much of the pre-game attention, has understandably been directed at the two featured backs, as both Jon Cornish and Kory Sheets are having strong seasons.  Cornish actually has an outside shot at setting the franchise record for rushing yards in a season. He is 207 yards behind the record of 1,896 set by Willie Burden in 1975.

There is also the battle of defensive lines. Saskatchewan boasts a trio of talented defensive ends in Alex Hall, John Chick and Ricky Foley.  Calgary, meanwhile, counters with Charleston Hughes and Cordaro Law at their ends.

Quarterbacks better be ready to move.

However, the game may actually come down to none of those players.  The difference-maker in the contest may be veteran receiver Chris Getzlaf.

The Regina product has had several very successful seasons in the CFL.  However, he seems to rise to another level against the Calgary Stampeders.

Over his career, he has  hauled in 11 touchdowns against Calgary on 70 receptions.  When you consider he has 32 career touchdowns and 296 career receptions, it is clear he has been extremely productive against the Stampeders.

Yes, the teams are frequent opponents by virtue of being in the same division.  But even that proximity doesn’t fully explain the run of success Getzlaf has had against the Stampeders

His running mate, Weston Dressler is also very productive against Calgary.  He has racked up six 100-yard games in his career against the Stampeders.

In the two prior meetings this year, the pair have teamed up for four touchdowns and 25 catches.  They may be the keys to the game.

Calgary will again juggle their offensive line, entering the game with Saskatchewan. Dan Federkeil will return after a five-week absence due to a groin strain. His return is well-timed as stalwart Stanley Bryant sits with a knee injury.

As mentioned, the stands will be full and very colourful. Whenever Saskatchewan appears in Calgary, Roughrider supporters always surface in their team’s garb.  Stampeders suppporters also counter, repping their team’s red and white colours.  This year however, there will be another colour to contend with in the stands.

This game is the annual Pink Power game.  Pink-hued wear will be available to wear at the stadium.  If nothing else, it should be colourful with pink, green and red dominating the stands.

Should top spot go down to the final week, Calgary will conclude their season in Vancouver while Saskatchewan will host Edmonton.  One thing is certain, the Stampeders don’t want the top spot to be in play in that final week.
