Pre-Game Breakdown: Tiger-Cats at Argonauts

Ticats.ca Staff

One of the biggest rivalries in the Canadian sport kicks off again this weekend as the Tiger-Cats travel to the Rogers Centre to take on the Toronto Argonauts. You’ll have to look back to week one of the season for the last time the two teams met, when the Argos squeaked out a 39–34 victory over the Ticats in Kent Austin’s Hamilton debut.

Toronto heads into this weekend’s matchup as the hottest team in the CFL, with backup pivot Zach Collaros looking more than capable filling the void for an injured Ricky Ray. The Ticats are three games back of the Argos after losing to the Stampeders last weekend and will be eager to get back to into the win column against their storied rival.

Canadian receiver Andy Fantuz continues to be a sure-handed target for Tiger-Cats quarterback Henry Burris.

In eight starts this season, Fantuz has caught 48 passes for 678 yards three touchdowns.

Fantuz must be looking forward to another trip to the Rogers Centre given his recent success there. In his last two trips to the Dome, he has amassed 264 yards and a score on 20 receptions.

In the Ticats week one loss to Toronto, Fantuz registered his best game in Black and Gold with 10 catches for 155 yards and a touchdown.

bulckeToronto Argonauts defensive back, Jalil Carter is only one of two defensive backs that remain in Double Blue after starting in the Argonauts Grey Cup win last November.

The second-year halfback has contributed 35 defensive stops, two special teams tackles, a sack, an interception and a fumble recovery for the Double Blue this season. Carter has posted four games with 4+ tackles this season, but only registered one tackle last week in Edmonton.

Looking back at the week one matchup Jalil Carter was the Argonauts last second-hero as he was the player who prevented Fantuz from coming down with a potential game-winning touchdown on the game’s final play.

THE FINAL STRETCH:

The Tiger-Cats next four games see them face the two teams they are battling for prime playoff position in the East Division.  Here’s a look at the schedule for all three teams over the final five weeks of the season…

BES

PLAYERS TO WATCH

WR/KR Brandon Banks
After spending three years in the NFL with the Washington Redskins, Brandon Banks signed as a free-agent with the Tiger-Cats earlier this week and is set to make his CFL debut on Friday night. Banks amassed nearly 4,000 total return yards during his time in Washington, and he’ll bring some much-needed speed to the return game (and possibly the offence).

DB Courtney Stephen
After missing the last two games due to an injury, Stephen is ready to return to the Ticats lineup at safety. Stephen, the eighth overall pick in the 2012 CFL draft, has compiled 21 tackles and three special teams tackles thus far in his rookie season.

RB C.J. Gable
Though fellow rookie Greg Ellingson has garnered much of the spotlight this year, C.J. Gable is putting together quite an impressive season for the Tiger-Cats. With 1,047 yards from scrimmage through 13 games, Gable has proven himself a versatile weapon out of the backfield. Last week vs. Calgary, Gable produced his first 100-yard rushing game, posting 132 yards on 13 carries. During his CFL debut in week one, Gable totaled 53 yards from scrimmage and scored two touchdowns in Toronto.
