Pre-Game Breakdown: Tiger-Cats at Eskimos

Ticats.ca Staff

The Ticats are looking to put another win under their belt before the bye week when they travel to Edmonton this weekend to take on the Eskimos at Commonwealth Stadium.

After back-to-back losses to the 5–0 Saskatchewan Roughriders, the Tiger-Cats face the 1–4 Edmonton Eskimos, with both teams looking to tally their second victory of the season. Veteran linebacker Jamall Johnson has been a solid contributor to the Tiger-Cats defence in 2013. Johnson, who has made the transition to middle linebacker this year, has displayed his leadership of a young Ticats defence as he leads the team in tackles with 19.

When the Ticats and Eskimos last met in week two, Johnson contributed a team-leading five defensive tackles and a sack, but it was not enough to hold off Edmonton’s rushing attack that had 177 yards.

In his last three trips to Commonwealth Stadium, Johnson had recorded a total of 12 defensive tackles and two sacks, with his best performance coming on July 9, 2011 when he finished second on the team with six tackles.

Charles

Charles is currently ranked sixth in the league and has provided 254 yards on 42 touches to an Eskimos offence that has yet to find its groove.

Although the Eskimos rushing offence sits fourth in the league with an average of 103.4 yards per game, Hugh Charles has been held to less than 50 yards in four out of five weeks this season. Charles best game of 2013 was in Edmonton’s 30-20 victory over Hamilton as he scampered for 119 yards, 70 of which came on his only touchdown of the game.  Since being awarded CFL Player of the week honours in week two, he has compiled a total of 113 yards, an average of 37.7 yards per game, to the Eskimos struggling offence.

In last year’s series finale in Hamilton, Charles was limited to 67 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.
