Along with thousands of local students, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are heading back to high school.
Beginning this month, Tiger-Cats players will commence a mentorship program at 24 high schools in Hamilton, Burlington and St. Catharines. Each participating school will be assigned a Ticats player that will visit several football practices over the course of the next two months.
At each practice, Ticats players will assist coaches with drills while providing guidance and advice to the young players.
“We are proud of our players for embracing this program and becoming strong mentors for local high school football players. Our players are outstanding role models for these student athletes and we look forward to the advancement of this program in the coming years,” said Ticats President Scott Mitchell.
Ivan Yrgan, Head Coach at Assumption Secondary School in Burlington, commented, “The opportunity to have a CFL player interact with our players is an invaluable experience. Having a professional athlete doing this kind of work gives the kids a very real example of what hard work can accomplish. The work that the Tiger-Cats do in our community mirrors what we try to teach our students and gives our players a very positive example to follow on and off the field.”
