Voting is now underway to determine the All-Time Tiger-Cats team presented by AM 900 CHML. The seven nominees for defensive end were unveiled last night exclusively on CHML AM 900 during The Tiger-Cats Show.
All seven terrorized quarterbacks during their time in the Black and Gold, but only by voting can you determine which two deserve to stand with the greatest Ticats of all time.
The Nominees
Tim Cofield
Cofield spent only two seasons with the Black and Gold but he certainly left his mark in that short span, racking up 35 sacks in that time, including an astounding five-sack performance on Labour Day in 1993. Cofield was named an East Division and CFL All-Star for both seasons in Hamilton and was the East finalist for Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 1994.
Grover Covington
Covington played in Hamilton for 11 years and was named an East Division All-Star seven times. His 157 career sacks in the Black and Gold are a Tiger-Cat and CFL record which still stand to this day. Covington holds the record for sacks in a Grey Cup game with five, from his incredible performance in the 1988 championship game.
Tim Cheatwood
Cheatwood played with the Ticats for five seasons from 2002-06, and was named an East Division All-Star twice during that time. His 41 sacks as a Ticat are good enough for 4th place all-time and include his big 2004 season where he brought down opposing quarterbacks 14 times.
Billy Ray Locklin
Locklin spent six seasons in Hamilton from 1965-70 and was named a CFL All-Star three times. He was nominated by the team as Most Outstanding Lineman twice and helped lead the Black and Gold to Grey Cup victories in 1965 and 1967.
Vince Mazza
For five seasons from 1950-54 V,ince Mazza helped anchor an impressive Hamilton defensive line. His performance during the 1952 season was good enough to net him the East Division Most Outstanding Player title. In 1953 he helped lead the Tiger-Cats to their first ever Grey Cup.
Joe Montford
Montford spent eight years with the Tiger-Cats during two stints in Hamilton. His 95 career sacks are good enough for second-most in team history and include his record-setting 1999 season, where he racked up a team-record 26. Montford was named the CFL Most Outstanding Player three times in his career, and was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 2011.
Pete Neumann
For 14 seasons, St. Catherines’ own Pete Neumann helped anchor the Ticats front four and was named an East Division All-Star nine times in the process. His play helped lead Hamilton to eight Grey Cup appearances, winning the title three times.
