Rookie camp ended on Friday under less-than-ideal conditions, as heavy rain fell steadily during both the morning and afternoon practice sessions.
As Ticats.ca staff writer Fraser Caldwell mentions in his story, the poor weather only served to focus their efforts on the field. Caldwell also spoke to O-Line prospect Jason Medeiros, who is competing for a roster spot in familiar territory.
COACH CORTEZ SPEAKS
On practicing in the rain:
“It’s just a fact of life. It rains during a game, it gets cold. You just have to learn to adjust to it. I’m glad it’s raining. I hope we have a little adversity during the regular camp. You have to understand that you have to play the game no matter what the conditions are. It’s the same way on the other side of the field. Some teams react to bad weather better than others, and you have to be able to play no matter what the conditions are. If you can’t practice in it, you can’t play in it.”
“There are some things that change and some things that you can learn. As I told the receivers, although we all want to high point the ball and get our hands out away from our body, when it’s raining cats and dogs you might want to put your chest behind it too so that you get two chances to catch the ball.”
On the progress made by the rookies:
“We’ve got a good start on getting these guys up to speed so that they’re not running around like chickens with their heads cut off on Sunday. They ought to understand what we want and how we’re doing it on the field. Obviously, there’s going to be a lot more team concept, competitive things once we’ve got more players here. But at least they’ve got a taste of what’s going to happen.”
