Beautiful weather greeted the black and gold on Thursday as the Tiger-Cats opened rookie camp with a little over 40 players hitting the turf at Ron Joyce Stadium.
To paraphrase Head Coach George Cortez, a majority of the focus of rookie camp is education, not evaluation. That was evident on Thursday as the Ticats coaches staff spent a large portion of the on-field sessions working on skills and fundamentals. With that being said, receivers and defensive backs did go head-to-head in one-on-one drills today. Highlights of those battles included:
– Standout performances by defensive back Woodny Turenne and receiver Jordan Brescacin.
– A few great catches by receiver Onrea Jones, who made an impressive leaping catch over Matt Bucknor and another grab for a huge gain.
– A pair of bombs caught by receiver Joe Collins after breezing by defenders.
– The overall display of speed shown by the newcomers on both sides of the ball, specifically receivers Sam Giguere, Michael Galatas and running back Chevon Walker.
– Josh Maveety and Josh Bartel taking turns launching punts at the end of each practice. Acting as returners were Chris Duvalt, Michael Galatas, Onrea Jones and Chevon Walker.
