After eight seasons in the Canadian Football League, Agustin Barrenechea has announced his retirement from football.
Barrenechea began his CFL career with the Tiger-Cats in 2004 after playing four seasons at the University of Calgary. After three years with the Ticats, Barrenechea was dealt to the Edmonton Eskimos midway through the 2007 season. Following the 2008 season with the Esks, Barrenechea re-signed with the Ticats and spent his final three years with the Ticats. He spent the first seven seasons of his career as a linebacker before converting to fullback in 2011.
In 120 regular season games, Barrenechea racked up 240 defensive tackles, 55 special teams tackles, seven quarterback sacks and five interceptions. In 2006, he was named the Ticats Most Outstanding Canadian after recording 96 defensive tackles, the sixth-highest single-season total in team history.
“I have had the great fortune to be a part of two of the greatest organizations in the CFL and in that time I have played with, and for, some of the CFL’s best. I will carry those memories for eternity and hold them close to my heart. I want to thank the entire football community for embracing me and the fans for their continuous passion,” said Barrenechea.
