CIS Top 10: Rouge et Or remain atop rankings

OTTAWA — After defeating the Concordia Stingers 36-8 in a game that proved to a be a defensive battle until the later goings, the Laval Rouge et Or once again sit atop the Football Reporters of Canada – CIS National Coaches and Media Football Poll.

Spots one through five remained stable with Western, McMaster, Calgary and Saskatchewan all registering season-opening wins.

The one large shift was felt out West, as the no. 6 Regina Rams lost 21-10 to UBC at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.

Fifth-year quarterback Marc Mueller was injured on the first drive, opening the door for the Thunderbirds to take advantage. With the win, UBC earned their first spot in the Top 10 since Oct. 16, 2006.

UBC pivot Billy Greene completed 15-20 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns. He also regisrered 38 rushing yards. As for Mueller, he suffered a shoulder strain and will be out of the lineup indefinitely. As a result, the Rams slipped out of the Top 10.

The no.2 Western Mustangs opened their season at home with a dominating 86-22 win over Waterloo. They will travel to no.3 McMaster to take on the Marauders next Saturday. Those same Marauders also enjoyed a season-opening win, defeating Queen’s on the road 26-3.

The no. 4 Calgary Dinos kicked off their season with a win as well, defeating the Manitoba Bisons 35-31 on the road. Next week, they will face the upstart Thunderbirds for their home opener.

No. 5 Saskatchewan, defeated Alberta 38-7 in their home opener. They will play their second-straight game at home next week against the Rams. The Montréal Carabins are at the no.7 spot, following their 24-12 win over McGill. They’ll take on the Rouge et Or next week in Quebec City.

The No. 8 Sherbrooke Vert & Or opened their season with a 25-23 win over Bishop’s on the road. They’ll pay a visit to Molson Stadium to take on the Redmen in Week 2. No. 9 Saint Mary’s won an exhibition game 52-3 over Acadia and will open their season at home vs. Mount Allison.

Rounding up the Top 10 are the Laurier Golden Hawks, who defeated York 46-7 in Toronto. They will host Windsor at home on Saturday.
