Making any New Year’s resolutions this year? I have to. No choice. It’s imperative.
Like AC reading a defence. It has to be instinctive in 2011. But just because it is instinct, doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy.
Because too many moments in 2010 proved to me that some things gotta change.
Cox has to SIGN. The Als need Chip Cox busting up plays with his speed and his smarts in 2011 and beyond. Despite 2011 being the year that Anthony Calvillo will shatter all the significant CFL passing records, defence still wins championships.
Trestman CAN say “3-Peat”. I asked him about that in North Carolina, during the Habs-Hurricanes game on CJAD 800. He insists “it’s impossible.” That he’s not just playing word games. That the 2011 Als will be “totally different” from the 2010 Als. Let’s hope so and hope not at the same time. Here’s another wish: that every time there’s an NFL coaching change, Marc Trestman is not pushed into an awkward corner by media speculation.
Cahoon has to have CLARITY. The grind must surely have exhausted him. To work so hard so far from his family for so much of the year. Yet to be such an influence on the others in the room who don’t realize how lucky they are to have his example. To prove time and again that he is a winner. I won’t wish Ben “one more year.” That was said on Parade Day. I’ll wish him clarity and strength in making a decision that affects his family and his football family.
Calvillo can strengthen beyond recovery. 2011 will be a march to history. Actually a three-step drop to the CFL record books in every significant category. How can I be so sure? Because I know the drive and the faith and the grace he brings to the field and to Montreal.
My resolutions? See Tony Proudfoot. Play the saxophone. See another team grow, weaken, strengthen and march to another Grey Cup parade. To take a puff on a victory cigar even though I hate smoking. Tweet and Facebook more. Share more. Give more. Learn and live with fewer regrets and less second-guessing.
Walk the playing field like it’s the CFL and time to strap on the helmets. Live life wider, faster, fuller, and don’t be hesitant to bring the straight arm if the other guy really deserves it.
Happy New Year.
