OTTAWA — Calgary quarterback Erik Glavic and a pair of Western Ontario Mustangs, defensive halfback Craig Butler and kicker Lirim Hajrullahu, are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport football players of the week for the period ending Nov. 13, 2010.
The selection was made by a committee comprised of members of Football Reporters of Canada (FRC).
Glavic, a fifth-year arts student from Pickering, Ont., was honoured on offence after he led the Dinos to a 56-3 home win over Alberta and their third consecutive Canada West title, last Saturday. The 6-foot-6, 230-pound pivot, who was named Hardy Cup MVP for the second straight year, was almost flawless in three quarters of action completing 14 of 18 passes for 270 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions as Calgary tied a school record for most points in a playoff game. The No. 5-ranked Dinos (8-2) host the No. 9 Saint Mary’s Huskies (6-3) in the Mitchell Bowl national semifinal Saturday at 1:30 p.m. MST (3:30 EST) at McMahon Stadium, live nationwide on TSN and live on Radio-Canada in the four Western provinces.
Saint Mary’s receiver Ahmed Borhot, Sherbrooke wideout Simon Charbonneau Campeau and Western Ontario running back Jerimy Hipperson were also up for the award.
Butler, a fourth-year arts student from London, Ont., took home the weekly honour on defence thanks to a key interception in the end zone and a team-high seven solo tackles in a dramatic 26-25 road win over No. 4-ranked Ottawa in last Saturday’s OUA Yates Cup final. With his team holding on to a 10-3 lead in the second quarter, the 6-foot-2, 196-pound senior picked off a potential game-tying pass from Hec Crighton trophy nominee Brad Sinopoli in his own end zone. Western scored a field goal on its ensuing drive to go up by 10 points. The No. 2 Mustangs (9-1) travel to Quebec City this week to face the top-ranked Laval Rouge et Or (11-0) in the Uteck Bowl Saturday at 12 p.m. EST at PEPS Stadium, live on TSN and Radio-Canada.
Saint Mary’s linebacker Brian Ridgeway, Laval linebacker Frédérick Plesius and Calgary lineman Linden Gaydosh were also nominated.
Hajrullahu, a second-year kinesiology student from St. Catharines, Ont., was the choice on special teams after he kicked the game-winning field goal with 2.1 seconds left on the clock in the Yates Cup championship. The 5-foot-11, 217-pound sophomore was perfect on four attempts on the afternoon splitting the uprights from 32, 17 and 12 yards out, before quieting the Frank Clair Stadium crowd of over 7,000 with a 34-yarder.
Fellow kickers Brett Lauther of Saint Mary’s and Christopher Milo of Laval were also up for the distinction.
