OTTAWA (CIS) — Queen’s quarterback Justin Chapdelaine and Saint Mary’s teammates, defensive back Mark Holden and kick returner Jahmeek Taylor, are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport football players of the week for the period ending Oct. 9, 2010.
The selection was made by a committee comprised of members of Football Reporters of Canada (FRC).
Chapdelaine, a second-year physical education student from Abbotsford, B.C., was honoured on offence after he became the first quarterback in Gaels (2-4) history to throw for six touchdowns in a single game in a 66-1 domination of Toronto, on Saturday. The 6-foot, 187-pound first-year starter, who also scored on a four-yard run to open the scoring midway through the first quarter, racked up 284 yards on 21-of-25 passing (84%) on the day and found four different receivers in the end zone, including a pair of TD strikes of over 30 yards in the second frame. His six passing majors were one short of the OUA single-game record and two short of the CIS mark.
Quarterbacks Kyle Graves of Acadia and Jesse Andrews of Bishop’s were also up for the award.
Holden, a fourth-year arts student from Halifax, took home the weekly honour on defence thanks to a career-high three interceptions in a 43-16 road win over StFX on Friday night, including a 77-yard touchdown return in the fourth quarter. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior, whose first two picks came in the third stanza, added two solo tackles as the Huskies claimed their second straight victory to improve to 2-3 on the season. Holden ended the contest with 89 yards on interception returns.
Linebackers Samaël Lavaud of Laval and Sam Sabourin of Queen’s were also nominated.
Taylor, a third-year arts student from Mississauga, Ont., was the choice on special teams for the second straight week after he scored punt-return touchdowns of 56 and 63 yards in a span of five minutes in the third quarter of Saint Mary’s win over the X-Men. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound receiver, who had tallied 188 yards on punt returns and an 83-yard TD against Acadia on Oct. 1st, was back at it against StFX as he finished the night with 252 all-purpose yards including 169 on six punt returns, 44 on two receptions and 39 on four carries. His two quick majors in the third frame increased the Huskies’ lead from 14-7 to 28-7.
Kickers Christopher Milo of Laval and Dan Village of Queen’s were also up for the distinction.
