OTTAWA — Montreal running back Rotrand Sené, UBC linebacker Nathan Kanya and Calgary kick returner Nathan Coehoorn are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport football players of the week for the period ending Sept. 12, 2010.
The selection was made by a committee comprised of members of Football Reporters of Canada (FRC).
Sené, a second-year arts and science student from Montreal, was honoured after he racked up over 200 yards of offence and broke open a close affair with a late touchdown as the No. 3-ranked Carabins improved to 2-0 on the season with a 29-8 win over Concordia (1-1). The 5-foot-9, 210-pound speedster, who finished with a game-high 177 yards on 26 carries and 31 more yards on two receptions, powered his way into the end zone from three yards out with 3:56 remaining in regulation to turn a slim 14-8 lead into a 12-point cushion. Sené, who placed third in the country as a freshman a year ago with 981 yards on the ground, is third in the nation this fall after two weeks of play with 286 rushing yards.
Acadia receiver Stu Clow, Western quarterback Donnie Marshall and Calgary quarterback Eric Dzilewski were also up for the award.
Kanya, a fifth-year student from Hamilton, took home the weekly honour on defence after he tallied a match-high nine tackles, including four for a loss and a pair of sacks, to lead the Thunderbirds (1-1) to a stunning 31-12 upset over then-No. 2 Saskatchewan (1-1) in Saskatoon. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound senior, who is tied for the Canada West lead with 17 tackles after two games, helped the UBC defence rack up six sacks while holding the powerful Huskies to only 314 yards of total offence.
Acadia lineman Jake Thomas, Montreal defensive back Julien Hamel and Western halfback Craig Butler were also nominated.
Coehoorn, a fourth-year arts student from Redcliff, Alta., was the choice on special teams after he amassed 182 yards on 10 punt returns, including a 76-yard touchdown, to lift the No. 4 Dinos (1-1) to an important 24-21 win over No. 9 Regina (1-1). The 6-foot-2, 220-pound veteran, who was named a first-team all-Canadian as a receiver last season, scored on a spectacular play with three minutes left in the third quarter to give Calgary some breathing room and a 21-12 lead. Coehoorn’s 182 punt return yards rank fourth in Canada West history and are the most by a CWUAA player since Manitoba’s Brad Black had 191 against Simon Fraser on Sept. 24, 2005.
Kickers John Szilagyi of Mount Allison, Josh Maveety of Bishop’s and Dan Village of Queen’s were also up for the distinction.
