EDMONTON — The Edmonton Eskimos have traded their 9th overall selection and 22nd overall selection in the 2010 CFL Canadian Draft with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in exchange for the 6th overall selection in the 2010 CFL Canadian Draft. With that pick the Eskimos have selected Stanford University Cardinal defensive tackle Brian Bulcke.
The Windsor, Ontario native appeared in 35 games (9 starts) over four years at Stanford. He has accumulated 74 defensive tackles, five tackles for losses, five quarterback sacks and one fumble recovery over the four years. Bulcke has spent time at both defensive tackle and nose tackle for the duration of his collegiate career. He missed most of the 2009 season with a wrist injury.
With one more year of college eligibility left, Eskimo General Manager and Director of Football Operations Danny Maciocia is excited to see what he will bring to the green and gold in a year. “Bulke is a great future acquisition for us,” Maciocia. “We’ve tried for the past few months to trade up in order to get him. He is a talented ratio changer that will be able to come in here next year and start right away. We are very, very happy to have him aboard.”
Regarded as one of the top three Canadian prospects in high school, Bulcke played both defensive end and offensive guard at St. Anne High School in Windsor. He was a four year starter on both sides of the ball and was team captain as a senior. Brian was the youngest defensive starter on Team Ontario’s 2004 national championship team. During the summer’s the 6’4, 273 pound Canadian was a member of the Essex Ravens of the Ontario Varsity Football League where he started all four years and was captain for the final three.
The Eskimos also traded their 19th overall selection and 27th overall selection in the 2010 CFL Canadian Draft to the Hamilton Tiger Cats in exchange for the 12th overall selection in the 2010 CFL Canadian Draft. With that pick the Eskimos selected defensive back Saleem Borhot.
Borhot recorded 19 defensive tackles, three pass knockdowns, two interceptions for 47 yards and one fumble recovery in eight games in 2009 with the St. Mary’s Huskies. Prior to joining the Huskies, the Calgary native was a member of the CJFL’s Okanagan Suns. He was named 2005 Team MVP and was a Conference All-Star and an All-Canadian that same season.
The Green and Gold followed the first two picks up with a fifth (35th overall) and sixth (43rd overall) round selection.
At 35 the Esks selected OLScott Ferguson who started in all 11 games for the St. Cloud State University Huskies last season. The 6’6”, 330 lbs three-year starter was named to the First Team All-NSIC North Division Football squad in 2008.
With their final pick Edmonton chose defensive back Corbin Sharun. The Edmonton native spent 2009 with the Edmonton Wildcats of the Canadian Junior Football League. He was named a 2009 CJFL All-Canadian. He ended the season with 25 defensive tackles, five interceptions for 129 yards and a touchdown and one fumble recovery. Sharun played a big role in the Wildcats victory in the 2009 Prairie Football Conference Final as he recorded three defensive tackles, one interception for 12 yards and one pass knockdown. He previously played quarterback at St. Francis Xavier University (2006-2007).
