2010 CFL Canadian Draft summary

TORONTO — The 2010 CFL Canadian Draft is officially in the books after 47 players were selected earlier today. The full list of the players selected is available on CFL.ca.

Here is a look at what happened in today’s draft:

The Sasktchewan Roughriders chose Shomari Williams from Queen’s University as the first overall selection in the 2010 Draft. The Argos had the next two picks which they used to select WSU offensive lineman Joe Eppele and Concordia linebacker Cory Greenwood. With the fourth pick the BC Lions chose offensive lineman Danny Watkins out of Baylor.

Guelph kicker Rob Maver became the first kicker selected in the first round since 2007 when Calgary selected him at number five. Edmonton chose Stanford DL Brian Bulcke at six while Montreal took OL Kristian Matte out of Concordia to close out the first round.

Winnipeg’s first selection was ninth overall and they chose WR Cory Watson out of Concordia. Hamilton did not have a pick until the third round when they selected Laval’s Samuel Fournier wit the 19th overall pick.

Most by School:

St. Mary’s had the most players selected in today’s draft with four. Bishop’s, Concordia, Montreal, Simon Fraser and St. Francis Xavier all had three players selected.

REEBOK CFL Evaluation Camp Players:

Twenty-eight (28) players who attended the 2010 REEBOK CFL Evaluation Camp were selected in today’s draft.

CFL Scouting Bureau:

All 15 of the ranked players by the most recent CFL Scouting Bureau list were drafted, including the first six players selected.

Trades:

There were five draft day trades.

The Argos traded the first and eighth overall selections to the Roughriders for the second and fourth overall picks, along with non-import punter Jamie Boreham.

Toronto also obtained the third, 18th, 26th and 30th overall picks in the draft from the Lions in exchange for the fourth, 20th, 24th and 25th overall picks.

The Eskimos acquired the sixth pick overall from the Bombers in exchange for the ninth and 22nd picks.

The Eskimos also acquired the 12th overall selection from the Ticats in exchange for the 19th and 27th overall selections.

The Ticats acquired the 22nd overall selection from the Blue Bombers in exchange for the 28th overall selection and the negotiation rights to quarterback Alex Brink.
