OTTAWA — Calgary quarterback Erik Glavic, Queen’s defensive end Shomari Williams and Saskatchewan kicker Grant Shaw are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport football players of the week for the period ending Nov. 14, 2009.
The selection was made by a committee comprised of members of University Football Reporters of Canada (UFRC).
Glavic, a fourth-year social sciences student from Pickering, Ont., received the nod on offence following his game MVP performance in No. 2 Calgary’s come-from-behind 39-38 win over No. 3 Saskatchewan in the Hardy Cup final at Saskatoon. The 6-foot-6, 230-pound pivot racked up 585 all-purpose yards including 479 yards and three touchdowns on 28-of-36 passing (78 per cent), and a team-leading 106 yards and a score on the ground. His first two TD strikes turned an early 9-0 deficit into a 14-9 second-quarter lead, his third pass in the end zone tied the affair at 29 all late in the third frame, while his four-yard TD run with 2:03 left in regulation capped off an eight-play, 63-yard game-winning drive. Glavic, the 2009 Canada West player of the year and the 2007 Hec Crighton trophy recipient while at Saint Mary’s, hopes to lead the Dinos to a Uteck Bowl victory over his former team Saturday at 1 p.m. Atlantic in Halifax (tape delay to 4 p.m. Eastern on TSN).
Saint Mary’s running back Craig Leger, Laval quarterback Benoit Groulx and Queen’s quarterback Dan Brannagan were also up for the award on offence.
Williams, a fourth-year concurrent education student from Brampton, Ont., took home the weekly honour on defence after he recorded a game-high eight solo tackles, including three for a loss, and sacked all-star quarterback Michael Faulds in the end zone for a safety to help the No. 4 Gaels edge No. 5 Western 43-39 in the 102nd Yates Cup final. The 6-foot-2, 236-pound senior will anchor the Queen’s defence on Saturday as the OUA champions host top-ranked and defending Vanier Cup champion Laval in Kingston for the Mitchell Bowl (1 p.m., live on TSN and Radio-Canada).
Saint Mary’s linebacker Leroy Fontaine and Laval defensive lineman Marc-Antoine L. Fortin were also nominated.
Shaw, a fourth-year arts and science student from Edmonton, was the choice on special teams after he set a Huskies playoff record with five field goals and scored 18 points in the 39-38 Hardy Cup loss to Calgary. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound veteran, who also had 4.5 tackles from his defensive back position and averaged 45.2 yards on five punts, split the uprights from 27, 37, 38, 40 and eight yards out.
Kickers Justin Palardy of Saint Mary’s, Christopher Milo of Laval and Dan Village of Queen’s were also up for the distinction.
