The No. 5 Western Mustangs clinched a spot in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport football post-season in dominating fashion Thursday, putting up 582 yards of total offence in a 64-6 rout of the York Lions.

Western improved to 5-1, while York fell to 0-6 and out of playoff contention. York’s losing streak was extended to 17 games.

Western quarterback Michael Faulds played just one half, completing 18 of 26 passes for 249 yards and running in two touchdowns.

Faulds is 97 passing yards shy of the Ontario University Athletics career passing record held by former McMaster Marauder Ben Chapdelaine, and is 123 yards shy of the 10,000 milestone.

The Western defence limited the Lions to 92 total yards despite missing starting defensive linemen Mike Van Praet and Alexander Robinson.

The Mustangs made four goal-line stops in the opening three and a half minutes.

“Our coaches called our defence ‘soft’ after the last game (a 42-35 loss to McMaster) and we had to prove them wrong,” said defensive end David Lee. “We had to show our coaches, we had to show the nation that we are not soft and that we’re capable. We were on fire.”

The Mustangs defence recorded 11 tackles for losses, two interceptions and four sacks along with 52 total tackles.

York quarterback Nick Coutu was 7-of-20 for 107 yards and was picked off twice.
