MONTREAL — For the eighth consecutive season, teams from the Quebec University Football League (QUFL) will face their brethren from the Maritimes as the QUFL – Atlantic University Sport (AUS) inter-league play begins this Saturday. The two regional associations will hook-up for the final instalment of inter-league play on Saturday October 17, 2009.
QUFL teams have a record of 40-16 in the 56 inter-league games played since 2002. The Laval Rouge et Or and the Montreal Carabins have the most wins against AUS opponents having recorded nine victories in 10 games against the Acadia University Axemen, Mount Allison University Mounties, Saint Mary’s University Huskies and the St. Francis-Xavier X-Men.
“Our conference had just four teams when we began the interlocking schedule between Quebec and the AUS,” said Patricia Demers, director of university sport at the Quebec Student Sport Federation (QSSF). “The interlock has allowed us to consolidate our energies in favour of the development of Canadian university football and we have increased participation by two schools with the addition of Sherbrooke and Montreal to the QUFL.”
She added, “We are currently working in collaboration with the AUS to study how we can continue this partnership in the coming years.”
FROM COAST-TO-COAST
The QSSF and AUS are the only two regional associations to play inter-league football games during the regular season. For the second time, an inter-league game will be broadcast on national television, but for the first time it can be seen by fans from coast-to-coast on an over-the-air broadcaster as the television and internet networks of Radio-Canada, the French service of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) will broadcast the game featuring the Acadia Axemen at the Montreal Carabins, Saturday at 1 pm ET.
The last time that an inter-league game was broadcast from Quebec came on October 22, 2005 when the Carabins defeated the Saint Mary’s University Huskies 39-11.
In Halifax, the aforementioned Huskies host the Sherbrooke Vert & Or in a game that will be broadcast on television and the internet by EastLink TV at 1 pm ET.
Other inter-league games this weekend feature the McGill Redmen visiting the Mount Allison Mounties, while the Concordia Stingers host the St. Francis-Xavier University X-Men.
