OTTAWA — Western Ontario running back Nathan Riva, Queen’s defensive end Shomari Williams and Saint Mary’s kicker Justin Palardy have captured CIS football player-of-the-week honours.
Riva, a second-year arts student from LaSalle, Ont., earned the offensive player award after scoring five touchdowns to tie a single-game team record in the Mustangs’ 60-7 win over Windsor on Saturday.
The five-foot-11, 186-pound sophomore, who is tied for the CIS lead with eight TDs in three games, scored four times on the ground and once on a reception to finish the day with 131 rushing yards on 14 carries and 94 yards on four catches.
StFX wide receiver Akeem Foster, Sherbrooke running back Pascal Fils and Calgary running back Matt Walter were also considered.
Williams, from Brampton, Ont., won the defensive award after recording 7.5 tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery in the Gaels’ 20-8 road victory over Ottawa.
Saint Mary’s lineman Dan Schutte, Bishops linebacker Harrison Maloney and Calgary defensive end Andrew Obrecht were also nominated.
Palardy, a fourth-year arts student from Truro, N.S., won the special-teams award after kicking a career-best five field goals on six attempts to help the Huskies to a 38-10 win over Acadia.
Bishops kick-returner Steven Turner and Western kicker Darryl Wheeler were finalists for the award.
