CIS Football: Week #3 in review

ANTIGONISH, N.S. — The Saint Francis Xavier X-men withstood a fourth-quarter rally from Mount Allison to down the Mounties 27-21.

The No. 8-ranked X-men went up 9-0 in the first quarter on three field goals by Anthony Alix, before the Mounties’ Scott Brady dove in from a yard out in the second to make it 9-7 at the half.

The X-men (2-0) scored 18 unanswered points in the third quarter on a pair of safeties, a 68-yard touchdown reception by Nic Guest and a 99-yard run by Akeem Foster.

The Mounties (0-2) inched closer on Ben Stehr’s three-yard TD catch in the fourth to make it 27-14.

A 21-yard touchdown reception by Gary Ross cut the lead to 27-21, but Mount Allison would get no closer.

At Quebec City, Cesar Sanchez-Hernandez led top-ranked Laval past Montreal and now sits at 3-0 on the season.

At Windsor, Ont., Nathan Riva rumbled for 131 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries as Western pummeled the Lancers on their homecoming weekend.

At Regina, Matt Walter rushed for 259 yards to lead the University of Calgary to a road victory over the Rams.

At Ottawa, Jimmy Therrien rushed for 147 yards on 30 carries and a touchdown as Queens beat the Gee-Gees.

At Burnaby, B.C., Mike Wasylyniuk caught two touchdowns and had 89 yards receiving as Alberta beat Simon Fraser.

No. 9 Golden Hawks 29 Warriors 18

At Waterloo, Ont., Mike Montoya rushed for 204 yards on 28 carries and a touchdown as Laurier downed the Warriors.

No. 10 Huskies 38 Axemen 10

At Wolfville, N.S., Saint Mary’s accumulated 503 net yards of offence while holding onto the ball for over 40 minutes in its win over Acadia.

Gryphons 53 Varsity Blues 25

At Toronto, Nick Fitzgibbon rushed for 150 yards and four touchdowns as the Guelph Gryphons downed the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 53-25 in CIS football action Friday.

All four of Fitzgibbon’s touchdowns came in the second half, on runs of 32, 12, three and five yards. Gryphons’ quarterback Justin Dunk was 23-for-33 for 351 yards and two touchdowns as Guelph improved to 2-1 on the season.

Jedd Gardner was the top receiver for the Gryphons, hauling in six catches for 116 yards and a touchdown.

Andrew Gillis rushed for 93 yards on 11 carries for Toronto (0-3), while Drew Meerveld caught 11 balls for 141 yards.

At Montreal, Bishop’s quarterback Jesse Andrews was 12-for-22 for 169 yards and a touchdown in the Gaiters’ win over McGill.

At Winnipeg, Matt Henry ran for 139 yards and Nathan Friesen rumbled for 80 yards and two touchdowns as Manitoba beat UBC.

Marauders 49 Lions 8

At Toronto, Ryan Fantham tossed for two touchdown passes and ran for another as McMaster beat up on York.

Vert et Or 24 Stingers 14

At Sherbrooke, Que., Concordia dropped to 0-3 on the season as the Stingers fell to the Vert et Or, who improved to 2-1.
