OTTAWA — Acadia quarterback Keith Lockwood, St. Francis Xavier defensive end David Skillen and Montreal kick returner Frank Bruno are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport football players of the week for the period ending Sept. 13, 2009.
The selection was made by a committee comprised of members of University Football Reporters of Canada (UFRC).
Lockwood, a fifth-year senior from Torrance, California, completed 28 of 39 passes for 435 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions last Saturday to lead the Axemen (1-0) to a 58-15 season-opening win over Mount Allison (0-1). The 6-foot, 180-pound pivot, whose career high is a 456-yard performance against McGill in 2007, had TD strikes of 11, 30, 44 and 61 yards as Acadia racked up an impressive 640 yards of total offence.
McGill quarterback Jonathan Collin, Ottawa running back Jordan Wilson-Ross and Calgary slotback Anthony Parker were also up for the award on offence.
Skillen, a fourth-year business administration student from Fredericton, took home the weekly honour on defence after he tallied 3.5 tackles, 1.5 quarterback sacks and had a key interception to lift the X-Men (1-0) to a 24-19 upset of two-time defending AUS champion Saint Mary’s (0-1), which was ranked No. 4 in the nation going into the duel. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound veteran, who led the Atlantic conference with 10.5 tackles for a loss a year ago, sealed the victory for StFX when he intercepted a pass at the Saint Mary’s 40-yard line with 1:12 remaining in the game.
Laval defensive back Olivier Turcotte-Létourneau, Western Ontario linebacker Conor Elliott and Simon Fraser defensive end Scott Puffer were also nominated.
Bruno, a third-year arts and sciences student from Montreal, was the choice on special teams after he set a single-game Quebec conference record with 214 yards on eight punt returns to help the No. 5-Carabins improve to 2-0 on the season with a 41-18 win over Concordia (0-2), which was ranked No. 9 before the contest. The 5-foot-9, 165-pound speedster opened the scoring Sunday afternoon with a 94-yard touchdown and set up a field goal with a 43-yard return on Montreal’s next possession.
Acadia kicker Mike Godfrey, Western Ontario kicker Darryl Wheeler and Manitoba returner Jeremy Botelho were also up for the distinction.
