OTTAWA — Running back Sébastien Lévesque and kicker Christopher Milo, both of the Laval Rouge et Or, and Calgary halfback Matt Grohn are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport football players of the week for the period ending Nov. 9, 2008.
Lévesque, a first-year science student from Brossard, Que., set a Quebec conference playoff record and a team single-game mark with 268 yards on the ground and scored all three Laval touchdowns as the No. 1-ranked Rouge et Or (10-0) captured a sixth straight Dunsmore Cup with a 28-17 win over No. 9 Concordia in the QUFL final on Sunday. The 5-foot-9, 195-pound freshman, who carried the ball 19 times on the day, found the end zone from 51 yards out early in the second quarter and from 47 yards 42 seconds into the third frame, and sealed the Laval victory with a 90-yard major with 56 seconds left in regulation. The Rouge et Or host the No. 6 Calgary Dinos (7-3) Sunday in the Uteck Bowl national semi-final.
Quarterbacks Jack Creighton of Saint Mary’s, Michael Faulds of Western Ontario and Deke Junior of Calgary were also up for the award on offence.
Grohn, a fourth-year communications student from Lethbridge, Alta., earned the nod on defence after a spectacular effort that helped the Dinos claim their first Hardy Cup since 1995 with a 44-21 win over No. 8 Simon Fraser in the Canada West title game on Saturday. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound senior had a team-high seven solo tackles, forced a fumble and recovered two balls himself on the afternoon, leading directly to 17 Calgary points.
Saint Mary’s linebacker Ryan King, Concordia linebacker Cory Greenwood and Western Ontario defensive back Craig Butler were also nominated.
Milo, a second-year industrial relations student, received the special teams award after he scored 10 points of two field goals, three converts and a kickoff single in the Quebec final. The Montreal native, who split the uprights from 30 and 17 yards out, also gave Laval good field position all day averaging 42,3 yards on nine punts and 63 yards on four kickoffs.
Saint Mary’s defensive back Joel Lipinski and Western Ontario kicker Darryl Wheeler were also up for the distinction.
