OTTAWA — Ottawa running back Davie Mason, Alberta linebacker Scott Stevenson and Saint Mary’s kick returner Jahmeek Murray are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport football players of the week for the period ending Oct. 25, 2008.
Mason, a third-year social sciences student from Brampton, Ont., set a CIS playoff record on Saturday when he rushed for 327 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Gee-Gees to a 42-37 OUA quarter-final win at Guelph. The 5-foot-11, 238-pound back, who had a career-best 31 carries on the day and also caught two balls for 30 yards, broke the previous post-season rushing mark of 317 yards set in 1981 by former Western Hec Crighton Trophy winner and current Mustangs head coach Greg Marshall. Ottawa (5-4) visits No. 2 Queen’s (8-0) Saturday in OUA semi-final action.
Saint Mary’s receiver Ryean Warburton, Montreal quarterback Marc-Olivier Brouillette and Saskatchewan tailback Jamal Allen were also up for the offensive award.
Stevenson, a fifth-year physical education and recreation student from Raymond, Alta., earned the nod on defence after he wrapped up his Golden Bears career with a touchdown off a 25-yard interception return, a key fumble recovery and a game-high 11.5 tackles in a season-ending, 20-9 win over then-No. 4 Calgary (5-3). The 6-foot, 210-pound senior forced a fumble and recovered the ball in Alberta territory in the first minute of the first quarter and the Bears trailing 8-0, and tied the game at 8-8 on the first play of the third frame with his first touchdown of the campaign.
Acadia lineman Adrian Saturley, Concordia linebacker Cory Greenwood and Wilfrid Laurier free safety Courtney Stephen were also nominated.
Murray, a first-year arts student from Mississauga, Ont., received the special teams award after he scored on a 52-yard punt return to help the No. 5 Huskies (7-1) finish the regular season on a high note with a 49-7 win over StFX. The 19-year-old receiver ended the day with 192 all-purpose yards off nine punt returns, three kickoff returns, two receptions and one carry.
Concordia kicker Rene Paredes, Wilfrid Laurier returner Dillon Heap and Saskatchewan kicker Connor MacDougall were also up for the distinction.
