OTTAWA – Saint Mary’s running back Devon Jones, Regina linebacker Bruce Anderson and Guelph kicker/punter Rob Maver are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport football players of the week for the period ending Sept. 28, 2008.

Jones, a second-year arts student from St. Albert, Alta., accounted for 53 percent of the Huskies total offence on Saturday tallying 251 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries as No. 3-ranked Saint Mary’s (4-0) remained undefeated on the season with a 28-23 win over Acadia. The five-foot-10, 230-pound sophomore, who averaged 8.7 yards per carry on the day, scored twice from 16 yards out – late in the second quarter and midway through the third frame -, both times giving the 2007 Vanier Cup finalist Huskies a narrow one-point lead. Jones’ 251-yard effort is the best single-game rushing performance in the AUFC this fall.

Laval quarterback Benoit Groulx, Windsor quarterback Sam Malian and Saskatchewan wide receiver Travis Gorski were also up for the offensive award.

Anderson, a kinesiology and health student from Port Moody, B.C., earned the nod on defence for his two interceptions, one fumble recovery and 6.5 tackles in a 31-7 upset win over No. 10 Simon Fraser (3-2). The six-foot-one, 222-pound middle linebacker killed two SFU drives in Regina territory in the third quarter, intercepting a pass at the 36-yard line and recovering a fumble at the Rams’ 30, while his second pick of the afternoon led to a field goal three minutes into the fourth stanza.

StFX linebacker Henoc Muamba, Laval linebacker Kelly Hilaire and Queen’s free safety Alex Daprato were also nominated.

Maver, a third-year political science student from Brampton, Ont., received the special teams award after he was perfect on three field-goal attempts and averaged 44.6 yards on eight punts in a 30-0 Guelph victory over Toronto. The 22-year-old junior split the uprights from 31, 35 and 27 yards out to bring his season total to 10 field goals, good for a share of the OUA lead.

Acadia kicker Mike Godfrey and Montreal returner Hamid Mahmoudi were also up for the distinction.
