The Windsor Lancers had a second quarter to remember, then overcame a forgettable second half to post their biggest win of the Canadian University football season.
Quarterback Sam Malian threw for 224 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Daryl Stepheson ran for 136 yards and a score as the Lancers held on to beat the No. 5 Ottawa Gee-Gees 40-38.
Malian’s two TD passes came in a 35-point second quarter for Windsor (3-2), which led 37-3 at one point. The Gee-Gees (3-2) chipped away at the deficit in the second half, but fell just short.
Ottawa did a woeful job taking care of the football, surrendering a season-high six turnovers. Quarterback Josh Sacobie was the biggest offender, throwing three interceptions in the first quarter and five in the game.
The Lancers scored their first touchdown when defensive back Bryan Quayson picked off a Sacobie pass and returned it 17 yards to the Ottawa 22. Stephenson did all the work from there, completing the drive with a six-yard run for a touchdown to give Windsor a 9-3 lead.
They extended their lead on the very next play as defensive back Matt Bucknor returned a fumble for a touchdown to stretch the lead to 13.
After that, Malian took over for the Lancers, hitting wide receivers Jordan Brescacin and Glenn MacKay for back-to-back touchdowns to give Windsor a 30-3 lead. The Lancers weren’t finished yet, as defensive lineman Seamus Postuma punched it in from the one-yard line to give the Lancers a commanding 34-point advantage.
The Gee Gees came right back, scoring two touchdowns 29 seconds apart to cut into the Windsor lead and pull to within 21 points at the half.
Ottawa continued to push back in the third quarter. A field goal, a 51-yard run for a touchdown from running back Felix Potivn-Desjardins, and a conceded safety made it 37-27 after three quarters.
In the fourth, Robert Eeuwes nailed a 32-yard field goal to stretch the Lancers’ lead back to 13.
After a stunning 70-yard completion by Sacobie to wide receiver Ron Kelly, Potvin-Desjardins punched in his second touchdown of the game to once again give Ottawa life. Potvin-Desjardins finished with 126 rushing yards on just 12 carriers.
The Lancers defence stood strong from there, stopping the Gee Gees twice in the last five minutes inside the Lancers 40-yard line. A pair of conceded safeties made it a two-point game with two seconds left in the game, but the last gasp effort from Sacobie was knocked down.
Sacobie finished 25-of-41 for 353 yards.
