OTTAWA – Ottawa quarterback Josh Sacobie, Saskatchewan defensive back Grant Shaw and McGill kicker Austin Anderson are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport football players of the week for the period ending Sept. 7, 2008.

Sacobie, a fifth-year social sciences student from Fredericton, completed 13 of 16 passes for 336 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in only two quarters of play as the No. 6-ranked Gee-Gees evened up their conference record at 1-1 with a 71-3 victory over York. The senior pivot, named OUA player of the year in 2007, averaged an astounding 25.8 yards per completion against the Lions, including scoring strikes of 80, 63 and 30 yards that allowed him to set an OUA career record of 67 touchdown passes, two more than the previous mark set by Wilfrid Laurier’s Bill Kubas from 1990-94.

StFX running back James Green, Sherbrooke receiver Alain Dorval and Calgary quarterback Deke Junior were also up for the offensive award.

Shaw, a second-year arts and science student from Edmonton, earned the nod on defence after he racked up three tackles, forced a fumble and had a pair of interceptions off two-time Canada West player of the year Teale Orban as the No. 2-ranked Huskies improved to 2-0 on the season with an impressive 42-14 win over provincial rival Regina. Shaw’s 37-yard interception return in the fourth quarter led to Saskatchewan’s fifth touchdown of the afternoon and put the game out of reach at 35-14.

StFX linebacker Henoc Muamba, Concordia safety Bryan Charleau and Western Ontario safety Matt Carapella were also nominated.

Anderson, a first-year management student from Canmore, Alta., received the special teams award after he kicked five field goals in as many attempts in his university debut. The 19-year-old freshman, the son of NFL legend Gary Anderson, connected on kicks from 27, 43, 21, 42 and 32 yards for the Redmen, who last season became the first CIS team since 1979 to go an entire campaign without attempting a field goal. Despite Anderson’s performance, McGill dropped its season opener 45-17 to Sherbrooke.

Mount Allison kicker Olivier Eddie, Western Ontario kicker/punter Darryl Wheeler and UBC returner Spencer Betts were also up for the distinction.
