Uteck and Mitchell Bowls: Head-to-Head look
OTTAWA (CFL.ca wire) -– Old rivals will meet in Halifax on Saturday in one of CIS’ football national semi-finals, while unfamiliar foes will battle in Winnipeg in the second duel for a berth in the 2007 Desjardins Vanier Cup.
The top-ranked and reigning CIS champion Laval Rouge et Or (10-0) from the QUFL visit the No. 4 Saint Mary’s Huskies (8-1) from the AUFC at Huskies Stadium at 1 p.m. Atlantic (12 p.m. Eastern) in the Uteck Bowl, while the No. 10 Western Ontario Mustangs (7-4) from the OUA travel to Canad Inns Stadium to battle the No. 3 Manitoba Bisons (10-0) from Canada West at 3 p.m. Central (4 p.m. Eastern) in the Mitchell Bowl.
Both games will be televised live on The Score and RDS.
Laval – Saint Mary’s match-ups have become quasi-annual classics since the Quebec and Atlantic conferences launched inter-lock play in 2002.
The perennial division champions, who first crossed path in the 1999 national final, will meet for the ninth time in as many years this weekend, including a pair of Vanier Cup clashes and one Bowl game in Nova Scotia’s capital that the Rouge et Or would rather forget. In the 2001 Atlantic Bowl, the second meeting in history between the two teams, the Huskies dominated their visitors 48-8 en route to the first of back-to-back Vanier Cup victories.
Laval, which has taken both head-to-head CIS finals, in 1999 and 2003, leads the all-time series 6-2, including a 29-22 win earlier this season in Quebec City.
Meanwhile in Winnipeg, the Mustangs and Bisons will meet for only the second time in history, and for the first time in official competition.
Manitoba beat Western 28-14 in a pre-season contest at JW Little Stadium in London, Ont. in 1974. The non-conference loss didn’t seem to have a devastating effect on the Mustangs, who rebounded later that fall to claim their second of a record six Vanier Cups.
While their programs haven’t clashed in ages, the two head coaches involved in Saturday’s Mitchell Bowl faced each other in 2001, Brian Dobie’s Bisons defeating Greg Marshall’s McMaster Marauders 27-6 in the Churchill Bowl.
The unlikely Yates Cup champion Mustangs, who have racked up seven straight wins since an 0-4 start, including three road victories in the OUA playoffs, will have to beat the odds once again if they hope to continue their formidable run past the weekend.
Since national semi-finals were implemented in 1967, only two teams have returned from Western Canada as Bowl champions, Queen’s in 1968 and McGill in 1973. On the bright side, both the Golden Gaels and Redmen beat Manitoba in Winnipeg to earn the right to play for the Vanier Cup.
Here is a closer look at Saturday’s match-ups.
