SASKATOON (CFL.ca wire) — Saskatoon native Aaron Ifield kicked a 51-yard field goal on the last play of the game as the visiting Calgary Dinos (2-4) upset the No. 5-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies 20-19 in Canada West football action, on Saturday.
Ifield’s game-winning kick is the first 50-yarder of the CIS season and is only one yard short of the longest field goal in Dinos history registered by Greg Vavra against Saskatchewan on Sept. 22, 1983. Former Manitoba Bison and current Saskatchewan Roughrider Jamie Boreham set the Canada West mark of 55 yards, also against the Huskies, on Oct. 20, 2001.
Ifield, who has hit on two thirds of his attempts this fall (8-of-12), was two-for-two on the day. His 15-yarder late in the third quarter brought Calgary back to within two points at 12-10.
The win ended a six-game losing streak for the Dinos against the Huskies, dating back to a 15-10 victory on Oct. 26, 2002. Saskatchewan beat Calgary 27-13 earlier this season, on Sept. 8.
Calgary was trailing 19-10 when quarterback Julian Marchand connected with Nathan Coehoorn for a 56-yard touchdown with 6:58 remaining in the fourth frame to cut Saskatchewan’s advantage to two once again.
Running back Anthony Woodson was a workhorse for the Dinos finishing with 153 rushing yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. Woodson leads Canada West with 832 yards on the ground and is third in the nation with 138.7 rushing yards per game.
Coehoorn also had a huge afternoon hauling in eight balls for 156 yards and a score. Marchand finished 13-of-28 for 196 yards with two interceptions.
For the Huskies, pivot Lawrence Nixon was brilliant in the losing cause completing 23 of 33 passes for 406 yards, two majors and no picks. He threw a 56-yard TD pass to Scott McHenry 30 seconds into the third stanza and found Karl Phillips in the end zone from 20 yards out in the fourth.
Calgary hosts Simon Fraser next Saturday. Saskatchewan visits Alberta.
