Canada Cup (U17): Manitoba 8, West Ontario 0

SHERBROOKE (CFL.ca wire) -– A 68-yard touchdown pass from Brett Cameron to Danny Turek paved the way for Manitoba’s 8-0 victory over Western Ontario Saturday morning in the opening game of the 2007 Canada Football Cup.

With 10 minutes left in the first half, Turek scored what would prove to be the only touchdown in an otherwise defensive battle. The two teams combined for only 340 yards of total offense while Manitoba managed only 113 yards and seven first downs on the game.

Western Ontario’s offense was hurt by turnovers, fumbling the ball three times while also throwing an interception.

Matt Anderson led the Manitoba defence with 8.5 tackles and seven solo tackles.

Unlike the other games in the championship, the tournament format still allows the loser of the Manitoba-Western Ontario game to participate in the Gold Medal match as both teams have already been given guaranteed berths in the semi-finals.

Manitoba’s next game is Tuesday against Eastern Ontario, which defeated Northern Alberta 17-6 in the quarterfinal.

Western Ontario’s next game will be against Quebec in the semi-finals. Quebec defeated Southern Alberta 30-24 in their first game.
