Despite not having a pick until the fourth round of yesterday’s CFL draft, the Toronto Argonauts were pleased with their four-player haul.

With their first pick, the 29th overall selection, Toronto took Laval linebacker Eric Maranda, whose stock dropped because of off-season shoulder surgery.

“Eric Maranda is a hell of a football player who was high on our draft board,” said Greg Mohns, Toronto’s assistant general manager and director of player personnel. “He undoubtedly would have been a first- or second-round pick if he were healthy.”

The Argos took San Diego State tight end Steve Schmidt with the 30th pick. Mohns said Schmidt is a versatile player who could play tight end or fullback in the pros.

With their last two picks, Toronto took York defensive lineman Sean Simms and Queen’s receiver Brad Smith.
