Buono considering trading up for No. 1

By Vancouver Province

Could the No. 1 team in the CFL last year wind up with the top pick in today’s Canadian college draft?

It’s doubtful, but Lions coach/GM Wally Buono says there’s only one first-round pick he wants other than his own, and has approached the Hamilton Tiger-Cats about a deal to give his team the opening selection.

Hamilton has the first pick and general manager Marcel Desjardins has said it’s for sale. Having already signed two quarterbacks in the off-season, the Tiger-Cats are also looking at NFL retread Shaun King. Earlier in the winter, Buono was shopping backup pivot Jarious Jackson.

“I would trade for the No. 1. Then I control what I want,” said Buono, who will pick eighth barring a deal.

One rumour Tuesday had the Lions offering prospects Jay Pottinger and Ricky Foley in exchange for Hamilton linebacker Agustin Barrenechea and the top pick.

B.C. has praised its two draft picks highly in the past, however. Chances are it’ll take a different mix to make a deal.
