Yes, the Canadian Bowl is coming to B.C. but the question is…..will the Bowl stay in B.C.? That’s what the Vancouver Island Raiders will try to answer with a victory this weekend. One more game to play, one more game to win to make the perfect season a reality.
Coined the ‘little Grey Cup’, the national junior championship game, The Canadian Bowl, will be played this Saturday, November 11 at Caledonia Park in Nanaimo. The Vancouver Island Raiders earned their berth to the game by going undefeated in the B.C.FC regular season and continuing that streak to take the B.C. Championship, The Cullen Cup, over the Okanagan Sun by a score of 42-28.
The opponent now facing the Raiders is a tough team from Alberta, the Edmonton Wildcats, who also went undefeated in the regular season going on to win the Prairie Conference championship over the reigning CJFL champion Edmonton Huskies 21 to 15. The Cats then faced the St. Leonard Cougars of the Ontario Conference in the Canadian Junior Football League semi-final game, the Intergold Cup, winning handily by a score of 52-13.
But, this weekend is more than just a game as delegates from teams across the country will descend on Nanaimo for the league annual general meeting. Once the business is completed, the festivities begin as the CJFL honours it’s best at the ‘Intergold’ Banquet of Champions Friday night at the Coast Bastion Inn where the All-Canadian team will be announced along with the major award winners and National MVP’s. After the hardware has been handed out, there’s only one thing left to do….let the game begin!
Both teams will converge on Caledonia Park on Saturday at noon to decide who will carry the ultimate prize in junior football, the Canadian Bowl, off the field and into the record books as the 2006 Canadian Bowl Champion.
The Canadian Bowl can be heard live on the BCFC Radio Network at www.B.C.juniorfootball.ca and as an added bonus, Shaw Cable will also be airing the game on tape delay on Vancouver Island Saturday evening at 7 p.m. Coverage in Edmonton is scheduled for Sunday at a time yet to be determined. Check your local listings for more information and if the game will be aired in your area.
