Jones leads Wildcats in hardware haul

The Tristan Jones show continued to shine on the eve of the Prairie Football Conference championship game between the Edmonton Wildcats and Edmonton Huskies.

Jones, an Edmonton Wildcats running back, needed a U-haul to take home his PFC awards on Saturday night.

He was named offensive player of the year, most valuable player of the year and outstanding offensive running back.

“Awards like these are nice but we have more work to do Sunday,” said Jones, who set several PFC and Canadian Junior league records, including most yards rushing with 1,903.

“My teammates are also a big part of the awards.”

Jones was also named to the PFC all-star team.

Wildcats head coach Gary Durchik received coach-of-the-year honours after guiding his team to a 8-0 season — the first undefeated year in team history.

“This is my proudest moment in my football history,” said Durchik, who won a Grey Cup as an assistant coach with the Edmonton Eskimos in 1987. “It’s very rewarding to be with a team for four or five years — you grow up together. And to see where the boys are right now is just great.”

Huskies kicker Grant Shaw was named outstanding special-teams player.

“Sure, this is nice,” said Shaw, 22. “But there’s nothing more I want to do than win on Sunday as a team.”

Other awards winners included Wildcats’ Terris Paliwoda as offensive lineman of the year and teammate Dan Schutte was named outstanding defensive lineman.

Huskies quarterback Nathan Aldred was named to the PFC offensive all-star team.

Wildcats Kevin Wuthrich, Dan Cato and Mike Podloski were placed on the all-rookie team.
