Dinos shock No. 9 UBC 30-27

First win at the helm for new Calgary coach Blake Nill

CALGARY (CIS) – A 102-yard pass to the UBC two-yard line from highly-touted rookie quarterback Dalin Tollestrup led to a Calgary touchdown in the dying moments of the game as the previously winless Dinos (1-6) shocked the No. 9-ranked Thunderbirds (4-3) in Canada West football action on Sunday afternoon.

With the victory, the first at the helm of the Dinos for two-time Vanier Cup winner Blake Nill (Saint Mary’s 2001, 2002), Calgary ends a 10-game losing skid dating back to a 32-30 win over Regina on Sept. 24, 2006.

UBC had defeated Calgary 22-16 in the 2006 season opener for both teams, on Sept. 9.

The ‘Birds loss tightens up the playoff race in the Canada West conference.

While Manitoba (7-0) and Saskatchewan (6-2) have clinched first and second place, respectively, UBC finds itself in a tie for third place with Alberta (4-3), with the Golden Bears holding the head-to-head tie-breaker thanks to an 18-17 win on Sept. 16.

UBC ends the regular season on Friday night hosting the No. 2-ranked, undefeated Bisons while Alberta wraps up the schedule at home against the Regina Rams (3-4), who stand in fifth place only two points out of the last playoff berth.

Regina is 0-1 against the ‘Birds this fall and has yet to face the Bears.
