EDMONTON – It was hard to keep up with the Joneses Saturday night at Clarke Park.
Edmonton Wildcats running back Tristan Jones set three Canadian Junior Football League records in a 39-25 win over the Calgary Colts.
It’s the first time in the Wildcats history they have had an undefeated season since 1948.
And, just to add to the celebration, Shelley Jones — Tristan’s mother — took home the 50/50 jackpot.
Back down on the field, Tristan’s 28-yard touchdown scamper down the right sidelines with 10:18 remaining in the second quarter established a CJFL rushing record.
The run gave Jones 1,680 rushing yards on the season. The previous record was set in 1996 by Dean Jones of the Edmonton Huskies.
“It was nice to get both of those records out of the way at once so we could start playing football,” the 21-year-old said.
“I really wasn’t worried about the records. I was more worried about the team coming out and being flat because it was kind of a nothing game.”
Jones broke the rushing record on his fourth carry of the game. He entered the game 53 yards shy of the record.
“As a running back I guess the rushing record means the most,” said Jones.
“It’s really overwhelming.”
With the touchdown, Jones set a scoring record with 144 points.
The previous record was held by Reg Boudreau who racked up 140 points in 1977 for the Saskatoon Hilltops.
Jones had three touchdowns on the night as the Wildcats led 14-10 at halftime.
He set another record three minutes into the fourth quarter when he went over the 200-yard mark in the game.
It was his sixth 200-yards-plus game, rewriting the record books once again.
He ended the game with 27 carries for 290 yards and ended the season with 1,903 yards.
Jones’s father Milson, a former Edmonton Eskimos running back, was in the stands for the game.
“It was good having him here,” said Jones. “When things weren’t going our way he came down to the bench and helped settle me down.
“That really helped me.”
The Wildcats begin the playoffs next weekend against the Regina Thunder.
