
(CIS) — Quarterback Bret Thompson fired four touchdown passes in the opening half as the number two ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies blasted the University of Calgary Dinos 55-10 in Canada West football league action Friday evening. The win for the Huskies was their fifth in as many games while Calgary falls to 0-4.
The Huskies struck on the game’s opening possession with Thompson hitting receiver Scott McHenry for a 51-yard pass at 2:09 of the opening quarter. The Huskies Braden Suchan kicked a 44-yard field goal at 7:44 giving the Huskies a 10-0 margin.
Saskatchewan engineered an impressive nine play 108-yard drive with a three yard pass to Dan Houle on the final play of the opening quarter. The key play was a 77-yard to strike to McHenry to the Calgary three yard line.
Thompson found a wide open Karl Phillips taking advantage of a breakdown in the Calgary secondary for a 70-yard pass and run play at 7:56 of the second quarter giving the Huskies a 24-0 lead.
Suchan added a 33-yard field goal with 1:31 left in the half to give Saskatchewan a 27-0 lead.
The Huskies were not done. Phillips caught five yard pass from Thompson with five seconds left in the half giving them 34-0 margin capping a six play 34-yard drive. The drive was set up after Calgary quarterback Dalin Tollestrup was intercepted by Saskatchewan’s Jody Burrows.
The Huskies pounded the ball down field on the opening possession of the second half with Scott Stevens scoring on a two yard run at 3:35 of the third quarter making the margin 41-0.
Tollestrup engineered a six play 77-yard drive finding slotback Chris Stevens for a 23 yard touchdown pass putting Calgary on the board at 10:04 of the third quarter.
Kicker Aaron Ifield added a 26-yard field goal 45 seconds into the final quarter making the score 41-10.
Tyler O’Gorman scored on a 19-yard run at 6:46 of the final quarter making the score 48-10. O’Gorman added his second touchdown from two yards out with a minute remaining in the game to close out the scoring.
Thompson was 19-for-26 for 342 yards passing with McHenry hauling in three passes for 144 yards. Scott Stevens rushed 20 times for 122 yards and O’Gorman carried 17 times for 142 yards.
Tollestrup was 21-for-39 for 264 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Calgary’s leading receiver was Alex Andrews who had eight receptions for 60 yards and eight rushes for 76 yards.
Saskatchewan hosts Manitoba in battle for first place next weekend while Calgary heads to Regina to play the University of Regina Rams.
