Dog fight to the finish

Huskies steal victory in dying seconds

SASKATOON (CIS) — At Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon the University of Saskatchewan Huskies found themselves in a dog fight that they didn’t want to be a part of. With the score tied at 17 headed to the fourth quarter, both teams would explode offensively creating one of the most dramatic finishes fans of the Huskies had witnessed in a long time. UBC thought they had stole a victory on the road after they scored with just 50 seconds left in the game to go up 33-28. That lead would be short lived as the Huskies marched 80 yards in just 44 seconds setting up a two yard touchdown catch by Dan Houle that put the Dogs up 35-33 with just six seconds left.

The crowd of 3,456 was sent into a frenzy as the Huskies sealed the victory, but just seconds before that Huskies fans were holding their collective breaths, wondering if it was going to be the first regular season game the Huskies would lose in two years. That wouldn’t be the case and for the second straight week UBC had their hearts broken on late play scores by their oppositions.

Both quarterbacks had respectable numbers on the day, as Huskies pivot Bret Thompson would pass for 275 yards, while throwing for three touchdowns and two interceptions. UBC quarterback Blake Smelser finished up with 295 yards passing, throwing for 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Each offence enjoyed quite a bit of success on the day as UBC was able to rack up 449 yards against a very stingy huskies defence. The Dogs totalled 523 yards and again enjoyed most of their success on the ground.

With the win, the Huskies clinch a playoff berth and move to 4-0 on the season. With another setback on the season the UBC Thunderbirds move to 1-2 on their season.

The U of S Huskies (4-0) head out on the road and take on Calgary (0-3) Friday night. UBC (1-2) is at home as they look to snap their two game losing streak against SFU (0-3).
