LENNOXVILLE (CIS) – The training camp roster for the Bishop’s Gaiters football team is now set with the confirmation that Justin Conn, an exceptional athlete from Fredericton, NB, will be attending Bishop’s University this fall. Conn, who was named Fredericton High School’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2005-2006, is expected to battle for playing time in the Gaiters linebacking corps as well as on special teams.
A co-captain of the FHS Black Cats this past season Conn helped lead FHS to a provincial high school championship. The versatile student-athlete played linebacker on defence and was also the team’s placement kicker. Conn also accomplished the unusual feat of starting on two other provincial championships with the Black Cats volleyball and basketball teams.
According to the Bishop’s coaching staff the 6’4” 200-pound prospect possesses similar physical traits to the Gaiters’ Kyle Jones who earned rave reviews last year in his rookie season with the Purple and Silver.
“Justin has the athletic ability to play the outside linebacking position at the university level,” defensive coordinator Marc Loranger said. “He is capable of covering receivers like Kyle Jones does and he has the speed to cover the entire field and is a good tackler.”
The arrival of Conn comes a year after the Gaiters recruited an excellent group of linebackers that included Kyle Jones, James Yurichuk and Hyacinthe Boule-Regnier.
Bishop’s opens the 2006 Quebec University Football season on Saturday August 9th when they host the McGill Redmen at Coulter Field in Lennoxville.
